PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The project´s objective is the validation in laboratory scale, and in a relevant environment, of a WEC prototype based on the new technology Butterfly Device. Differently to other hydraulic systems, this device uses water for the electricity conversion. Then, the pressurized fluid will travel to the coast, where the conversion will take place. To be more precise, this project has been taking place in the city of Valencia, in Spain.
The hydraulic PTO system presents a number of advantages in terms of power, size and efficiencies and also for the lower environmental impacts,
This project was developed by Rotary Wave S.L. with the financial support of CDTI and FEDER funds.
REASON OF INTEREST
This project would provide to Europe not only a new source of electricity, but also the possibility to offer other uses such as the desalinization of water. Considering that some European countries such as Spain or Greece have a lack of these resources the uses could be really helpful.
PROBLEMS & OBSTACLES
When it comes to the deployment of any type of WEC, one of the main issues is the survivability of the device. For overcoming this shortcoming, they have used a design of a strategy that can withstand the loads generated during an extreme event is instrumental for these projects.
SUCCESS FACTORS
The key factor that made possible the success of the project has been the proximity between the WEC and the coast. They are still studying a way to optimize this distance maintaining the efficiency while increasing the output (by installing these devices in deeper waters).
TRANSFERIBILITY IN MAESTRALE AREA
The device was already deployed in the Mediterranean Sea (Valencia), so it goes without saying that any area of this coast would constitute a prime location for their operation. However, there are areas where its functionality can be optimized in places with a stronger shortage of water and electricity resources.
>>> MORE INFROMATION ABOUT MAESTRALE
Maestrale is an initiative co-founded by European funds which is focused on the creation and development of marine or blue energy. Their aim is to promote research and investment in order to expand this kind of energy in the Mediterranean area.
